Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is a practical way to think about making web content easier for AI-assisted search systems to discover, understand, retrieve, and use as supporting information. It is not a replacement for SEO, and it does not come with a guaranteed formula for earning citations.
The useful version of GEO starts with the same foundations that already matter in search: crawlability, indexability, clear information, strong page structure, useful content, internal linking, authority, and a good user experience.

GEO is the practice of improving the clarity, structure, evidence, and retrievability of your content so it can perform well in search experiences that generate or synthesize answers from web sources.
How GEO differs from traditional SEO
Traditional SEO usually focuses on helping a page rank and earn clicks from search results. GEO adds another question: if an AI-assisted search experience is assembling an answer, is your page clear and useful enough to support that answer?
That changes the emphasis, but not the fundamentals. A page still needs to be accessible to crawlers. It still needs to satisfy a real user intent. Important pages should be accessible to search crawlers, return useful HTML, avoid accidental noindex directives, use sensible canonical URLs, and appear in a valid sitemap.
2. Answer-first structure
Do not force readers to scroll through several paragraphs of generic introduction before reaching the answer. State the core answer early, then add explanation, examples, evidence, and next steps.
3. Clear entities and context
Use specific names, definitions, relationships, and examples. Ambiguous writing is harder for people and machines to interpret.
4. Original value
Commodity summaries are easy to reproduce. Original frameworks, first-party observations, screenshots, experiments, useful tables, templates, and practical examples make a page more defensible and more useful.
5. Strong internal linking
Connect related pages with descriptive links. A coherent topic cluster helps users move through the subject and gives search systems more context about how your content fits together.
6. Accurate structured data
Structured data can help search engines understand a page, but it should describe content that is actually visible. It does not guarantee inclusion in AI answers or rich results.
A simple GEO checklist
- Is the page crawlable and indexable?
- Does the first screen clearly answer the main question?
- Are headings descriptive?
- Does the page include useful examples, comparisons, or tables?
- Are factual claims supported where appropriate?
- Is the content meaningfully different from generic summaries?
- Are related pages connected with internal links?
- Is the page maintained when the topic changes?
What GEO is not
GEO is not keyword stuffing for chatbots. It is not a promise that adding FAQ markup will make a model cite you. It is not a reason to mass-publish hundreds of thin AI-generated pages. Google’s spam policies explicitly apply to generative AI experiences, and scaled low-value content can create risk.
Where to start
Audit one important page. Fix technical blockers. Rewrite the opening so it answers the real question. Add one useful example or framework. Strengthen internal links. Then measure what happens in Search Console and your analytics.
